Carriage courses, riding trails, etc.:

All courses depicted are not assured to be safe or suitable for carriages, man, or beast. Proceed according to your own judgment. You are advised to walk each course and familiarize yourself with the obstacles, dangers, and circumstances. You are expected to use a realistic and conservative appraisal of your abilities and the condition and level of training of your horse or team. You are responsible for your tack and other equipment, of course.

  1. Course 1: “Main road course”. Distance; 1.88 miles. Surface; all gravel, in good condition. There are side ditches to be aware of. Grade; minor, but consistent slope toward the river. Notes: there are turn-around “loops” at each end, so backing should not be an issue. You are advised to familiarize yourself with the course before attempting it with a carriage. There may be motor vehicle traffic to contend with.

  2. Course 2: “Big barn field course”. Distance .85 miles. Surface; all grass. Grade; varies gently. Notes: this course is short and near the barns. Beware holes. You are advised to familiarize yourself with the course before attempting it with a carriage. Check with Winston to make sure the course has been mowed recently.

  3. Course 3: “Canal culvert loop”. Distance 1.18 miles. Surface; some gravel road, mostly grass. Grade; transition from the barn upland to the lowgrounds. Notes: often wet near the canal. Note also the hand-set, mortar free stone canal culvert. You are advised to familiarize yourself with the course before attempting it with a carriage. Check with Winston to make sure the course has been mowed recently.

  4. Course 4: “Lowground course”. Distance 3.47 miles. Surface; some gravel road, mostly grass. Grade; flat in the lowgrounds, steady gravel surface transitions from and to the upland. Notes: this course in not advised for green horses untrained in crossing railroad tracks. You are advised to familiarize yourself with the course before attempting it with a carriage. Check with Winston to make sure the course has been mowed recently.

  5. Course 5: “East uplands and pine path”. Distance 3.23 miles. Surface; gravel road and grass. Grade; mostly gentle, briefly steep. Notes: be alert for your turns...the woods road continues another mile or more. You are advised to familiarize yourself with the course before attempting it with a carriage. Check with Winston to make sure the course has been mowed recently.

  6. Course 6: “Goode's Hill course”. Distance 4.92 miles. Surface; maintained gravel roads, grass, unmaintained roads, a bit of everything. Grade; involves one steep, long climb. A horse in good condition and carriage brakes are suggested. Notes: this is a challenging course, involving a stream crossing, and long distances. In motor vehicles, I would suggest a 4-wheel drive vehicle only. You are advised to familiarize yourself with the course before attempting it with a carriage. Gate lock combination or key is available from Winston. Check with Winston to make sure the course has been mowed recently.
